At the Art Students League of New York, students are empowered to design their own curriculum, learn at their own pace, and choose from an unmatched selection of atelier-style classes in painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, mixed media, and more. There are no entrance requirements or examinations, and no previous art experience is needed to begin taking classes.
League classes—in the studio and on e-telier—typically follow a monthly format. Offered on an ongoing basis, with flexible month-to-month registration, classes are designed so that students and instructors can develop lasting relationships based on mentorship. Many League students attend classes with the same instructors for several years; others take classes with a variety of instructors to learn a diversity of approaches.
Many studio classes meet five days a week, with the instructor present for two to three of those days. Students who enroll in a class full-time have access to their studio all five days a week. Students enrolled part-time attend class twice a week, with the instructor present at least once. Other League classes meet only once or twice a week. Classes are offering in morning, afternoon, late afternoon, evening, or weekend sessions.
Short-term workshops meet on an intensive schedule for a weekend or up to a week. Workshops offer opportunities for students who can’t commit to a month-long class or who want to immerse themselves into a new technique or approach. While workshops are often taught by renowned League instructors, guest instructors with skills and perspectives new to the League also offer workshops.
Online classes are offered on e-telier, the League's virtual learning platform, allowing students anywhere in the world to study at the League. e-telier classes are offered on the same monthly schedule as studio classes, with registration ongoing. Most e-telier classes meet once or twice during week, with varying weekly schedules to accommodate a variety of student schedules.
There are no entrance requirements or examinations at the League, and no previous art experience is required. Most classes are designed for beginners and experienced artists alike. New students can explore the League’s offerings online (find studio classes here, workshops here, and e-telier classes here). If you’re not sure which classes might be right for you, the League’s knowledgeable and experienced clerks are happy to offer suggestions and advice. You can visit with them in-person at our 57th Street building or over the phone at 212-247-4510, ext. 6.
Classes run on an ongoing monthly schedule, with tuition due in full upon registration. You can register and start a class at any time, with tuition prorated, if you choose to begin after the first of the month. To continue a class, you must renew your registration and pay your tuition for each following month by the 21st of the month prior. Students can register for classes online (find studio classes here, workshops here, and e-telier classes here), in person at the League’s 57th Street building, or over the phone at 212-247-4510, ext. 6.
After you register for a class, you will receive a ticket to the class at the email address that you provided during registration. The class studio will be listed on your ticket. Bring your ticket to the first day of class to present to the class monitor or teaching assistant.
There is a recommended supply list on every class page—or you can ask at the office for a copy of your class’s supply list. The League's Art Supply Store, located in the first floor main lobby of the League, carries all the supplies you’ll need for most classes, and the store's knowledgeable staff can help you select the right products for your artistic practice.
Lockers are available to enrolled students for a monthly fee plus a one-time locker, and students must provide their own locks. Monthly locker fees can be paid in person at the registration desk or over the phone. League members are eligible to rent lockers in designated areas without being enrolled in a class.
Upon completion of 210 class hours, League students are eligible for membership. Members make up the governing body of the League, determining all changes to the constitution. All members in good standing have full voting privileges in determining changes to the League's constitution, and the League's Board of Control is elected from their ranks.
