The Insiders' Select

The Insiders' Select features works chosen by members of the Hollis Taggart staff. Encompassing contemporary artists, post-war New York School luminaries, and overlooked artists who elude either category, The Insiders' Select features an eclectic mix of treasures that are not frequently on view. League artists include Paul Jenkins, Theodoros Stamos, Knox Martin, and Ralph Iwamoto.

Naples: Course of Empire

Magenta Plains presents Naples: Course of Empire, a series of seven new paintings by Alexis Rockman. Rendered in Rockman’s signature style of history painting, these oil on panel works each display a stage in the life cycle of Naples, Italy and its relationship to the natural environment from the Cretaceous Period to a likely future post-climate disaster.

Louise Nevelson: Shadow Dance

This show will place Nevelson’s iconic monochromatic sculptures in black and white in dialogue with her collages—including several rarely seen and never previously exhibited masterworks—made in the 1970s and 1980s.

Deborah Kass | The Art History Paintings 1989-1992

From 1989-1992 Deborah Kass created The Art History Paintings, a series that established themes and strategies she would deploy for the rest of her career. Sourcing images from art history and popular culture, Kass examined how meaning, power, and value were constructed by the traditional narratives of art history. These works were created in the context of 1980s, a decade in which women painters and people of color were routinely excluded from galleries and museum exhibitions.

Dorothy Hood: Remember Something Out of Time

Hollis Taggart presents its first solo exhibition of the American artist Dorothy Hood (1918-2000) while announcing its representation of her estate alongside McClain Gallery of Houston, Texas. Featuring eight paintings alongside drawings and collages, the exhibition will showcase Hood’s work from the 1960s through the 1990s.

Powerhouses

Spanning generations and mediums, Powerhouses brings together a dynamic collection of 20 artworks by 20 artists. Paul Gardère: Vantage Points

Vantage Points delivers a loosely chronological, condensed version of Paul Gardère's trajectory through a range of styles from the early 1970s to the late 2000s. Throughout this expansive body of paintings, mixed media works, and works on paper, there is a continuous thematic focus on the artist’s Haitian experience and Haitian culture, both in Haiti and in the diaspora.

Carmen Herrera

Carmen Herrera painted for over seven decades, receiving recognition for her elegant, hard-edge style late in life. She made large-scale paintings, drawings, sculpture, and much later in life, began making murals modeled after her paintings, many of which have never been executed. Based on her painting La Fonteyn (2015), Untitled (2021) is realized here for the first time.

When Langston Hughes Came to Town

The exhibition begins by examining the relationship of literary giant Langston Hughes to the state of Nevada through a unique presentation of archival photographs, ephemera, and short stories he wrote that were informed by his visit to the area. The presentation continues with work created by leading artists of the Harlem Renaissance who had close ties to Hughes, including League alumni Charles Alston, Romare Bearden, and Norman Lewis.

The Magical City: George Morrison’s New York

This exhibition explores how George Morrison’s aesthetic inspiration and future trajectory drew from his love of New York, which he called a “Magical City.” Featuring 25 of his most important paintings and drawings from this early period, the exhibition culminates in his Horizon series.
