This class is a survey of traditional and contemporary printmaking techniques with a focus on open studio time. Beginning to advanced printmakers are welcome. Students will come with their own imagery and ideas and may delve into woodcut, linocut, drypoint, etching (including aquatint, grounds, and lift techniques), silkscreen, and stone and plate lithography. Both mark-making and photographic techniques can be explored. Multi-plate color printing, combining techniques, and editioning can also be introduced. Self directed exploration will be supplemented by one-on-one critique with the instructor to develop the conceptual and material aspects of your prints. Special tutorials based on class interest can be arranged.

Class Description: Printmaking has its own beauty that is different from that of drawing or painting. Although printmaking requires some initial training in basic processes, there are no limits to the richness of expression. This class will teach basic techniques of lithography, intaglio, and linocut. Our printmaking studio has four etching presses of diverse sizes, two lithographic presses, and 170 limestones for lithographic prints. Discuss your ideas with the instructor.

This Saturday class is a survey of printmaking processes, methods, and materials. Beginners and experienced students are welcome. Relief, intaglio, monoprint, silkscreen and lithographic processes will be taught. Students will learn how to create images using woodcut, linocut, drypoint, etching (aquatint, hard and soft grounds, lifts), and lithography on both stone and plates. Digital and photo transfer processes will also be introduced. This course includes a teaching fellow from the Cranbrook Academy of Art assisting with the course. Students in this class create work without using models or still life.
