March 31 – April 5, 2025 join us for a week-long celebration of Comics & Narrative Arts, featuring free classes, panel discussions, portfolio reviews, cosplay sketches, and a mini-comic con!
Meet and greet the artists and instructors from our Comics & Narrative Arts program in this opening reception. Works created in the program will be on display throughout the gallery for you to read and enjoy while sipping drinks and eating finger foods. See the comics, illustrations, and visual development sketches that are being made in our classes.
Level-up your figure drawing with professional artist Greg Follender (Scholastic, Heavy Metal, American Museum of Natural History), who will guide you through a drawing session with a live art model. Learn the importance of gesture, proportion, anatomy, and momentum with this free class that will give an overview of fundamental skills for comics and narrative art.
This panel discussion features celebrated cartoonists and illustrators Dean Haspiel, Olivia Fields, Mahdi Khene, and Klaus Janson, moderated by instructor Steven Walker. The discussion will be a practical guide for artists interested in pursuing a comics career, investigating how to self-start, create your own space, nurture your creative vision, and navigate the ever-shifting landscape of the industry.
This free class features Disney-trained animator, illustrator, writer, director, and instructor Umakanth Thumrugoti, who worked on features such as Treasure Planet, Chicken Little, and others. Gain valuable insights into visual storytelling, with a focus on character design, concept art, layout, and more. The class will include a lecture, a couple of demos (time permitting), and a screening of an Oscar-nominated animated short.
Enjoy this daylong mini-comic con featuring bright stars from the indie comics scene as well as portfolio reviews, an art contest, and free panel events on comics craft. Our main gallery will host over 2 dozen exhibitors—Josh Cornilion, Sabii Borno, Rahdia Rahman, and many more — plus offerings from our current Certificate in Comics & Narrative Arts students. Come to Studio 6 for art discussions with pros like Deb Lee and Andrew Drilon, and sign up for portfolio reviews from industry veterans!
