May 20 – 25, join us for a week-long celebration of Comics & Narrative Arts, featuring free classes, panel discussions, portfolio reviews, cosplay sketches, and a mini-comic con!
Level-up your figure drawing with professional artist Greg Follender (Scholastic, Heavy Metal, American Museum of Natural History), who will guide you through a drawing session with a live art model. Learn the importance of gesture, proportion, anatomy, and posture with this free class that will give an overview of fundamental skills to comics and narrative art.
This panel is meant to be a practical guide for artists who are interested in pursuing a career in comics. We'll investigate how to land gigs, stand out, and navigate the ever-shifting landscape of getting a job in comics. It will feature an esteemed panel of comics editors including Heather Antos, Greg Lockard, Kiara Valdez, and Anthony Marques. These editors are currently working for (or previously worked with) comic publishers such as IDW, First Second Books, Image Comics, Marvel, and DC Comics. The panel will be moderated by cartoonist Andrew Drilon.
In partnership with Brooklyn Comic Con (June 8-9), the Art Students League is proud to present a special, free figure drawing event featuring DC Comic artist Andrew Drilon, League instructor Steven Walker, and celebrity cosplayers L3xiCosplayz, YouWannaBett, and Cos.Atlas. Bring your sketchbooks, draw from live models, and learn lessons from comics pros. Enter art contests to win free comics and graphic novels!
Veteran animation artist Jeff Buckland (Disney, Nickelodeon) will guide you through a staple animation exercise since the 1930s: the humble flour sack. A simple way for animators to practice expressive weight and pose, the flour sack is an experience not just for beginners but for those wishing to continuously grow in the art form.
Join us for the culmination of our week-long League Comic Fest with a full day of events, including a mini-comic con, special lectures on the comics craft, and portfolio reviews. Our main gallery will host a slate of comics exhibitors — Mahdi Khene, Carmen Pizarro, Sabii Borno, Ethan Aldridge, and more — plus offerings from our current Certificate in Comics & Narrative Arts students. Come to Studio 13 for lectures on “How to Pitch for Comics,” “Scripting for Comics” with Nahuel FA and Alex Dvorak, as well as free portfolio reviews from industry pros such as Jamal Igle, Steven Walker, and others!
Upgrade your storytelling powers with veteran comics artist Steven Walker (Image Comics, Random House Books), who will teach you the power of visual narrative in an evening studio session. Learn the power of composition, sequence, clarity, and more with this free class that will help you express the stories in your head with confidence and joy.
This event was previously scheduled for May 21. Due to unforeseen circumstances, this class has been rescheduled to June 4.
