Classes and workshops at the Art Students League are taught by renowned and dedicated working artists. The League was founded as a collection of studios, each autonomous and directed by the creative authority and counsel of the individual instructor without interference from the administration—a tradition that continues to this day and ensures that students are able explore a range of techniques and modes of expression in our studios.
Throughout The League’s history, instructors have made an indelible impression on American art, often by inspiring their students to pursue groundbreaking careers—mentorship and superior technical instruction from instructors like Charles Alston, Thomas Hart Benton, and Peggy Bacon led directly to the success and innovations of students like Romare Bearden, Marisol, and Yayoi Kusama, among others.
Current instructors at The League are influential working artists in New York City, many of whom studied at The League under a previous generation of influential instructors, and the techniques taught in their studios were passed down to them by the previous generations of great artists.
